Phil Zimmermann
Phil Zimmermann is the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) the seminal encryption software that ushered in modern digital privacy. In 1991 he released PGP for free on the Internet as a tool for global human rights, triggering a three-year criminal investigation under U.S. export laws that treated cryptographic tools as “munitions.” The case was dropped in early 1996, marking a turning point in the Crypto Wars. A true cypherpunk at heart, Zimmermann also co-founded Silent Circle and developed secure VoIP protocols like ZRTP and Zfone. Widely recognized for both technical innovation and civil liberties advocacy, he has received numerous honors including induction into the Internet Hall of Fame and multiple awards for privacy and technology leadership. At Blockchain Jungle 2025, Phil brings the wisdom of decades spent defending encryption, privacy, and digital autonomy.
